Olimpico is a PRE (Pura Raza Espanolal) or Pure Spanish Horse - also known as an Andalusian. This is the first in a series of paintings I plan to create based on the beautiful horses owned by my friend Aida Huertes Dominiguez of Malaga, Spain.
There was just something about Olimpico that made me want to paint him first. He was so magnificent, with his gorgeous dappled coat, his massive strong body - and his dark mane - all I could think was WOW- I must paint this creature!!! I wanted to showcase the strength of his powerful hindquarters so I have him leaping out of the border. I also wanted to reference his Spanish heritage, so for the border I chose design elements inspired by the Great Mezquita (Mosque) of Cordoba Spain.
I think it's one of my most beautiful paintings.
