The inspiration for this painting came to me on one of my early morning walks with my dog Casey on the trails around my neighborhood.
I rounded a corner and spied a family of quail sitting on a dead saguaro cactus skeleton. At that moment I could see this painting in my mind's eye. They looked so beautiful sitting on the bleached ribs of a once mightly saguaro. I had decided that quails were going to part of this series, so when this scene presented itself to me it seemed very serendipitous.
There are no shortage of quails here in the Sonoran Desert, and I just love to watch them, especially when the babies arrive. They are very noisy birds, you really know when they are around. I used a Native American petroglyph of quail tracks on the front border and quail petroglyphs on all four sides of the gallery wrapped canvas.
I tried to create a bit of mystery in this piece, I wonder what desert drama has suddenly transpired to catch their attention?
